The base station must be set up by the conference organizers. Notebook
users need not concern themselves with these details.
Appendix mode is used when it is not possible for the WAVESEC gateway to be the among the routers that traffic from the 802.11 network passes through. The idea is to encrypt all traffic from laptops to a one-armed gateway that is connected by wires to the rest of the Internet. If you are using multiple machines, it's the IPsec server that stands as an appendix. Appendix mode is harder to setup because more IP addresses are required, and each client must be assigned an IP address manually. (X) Appendix mode WAVEsec relies on advanced routing tricks. Documentation for this mode is incomplete.
